Used Motor Oil Recycling Program Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Certified Center?

Certified Collection Centers are used oil collection facilities that have applied and been certified by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB). These centers collect oil at no charge and pay 16¢/gallon to people bringing in used oil for recycling. Additionally, these centers advertise their ability to collect used oil from the public.

By offering the 16¢/gallon incentive to do-it-yourselfers (individuals who change their own oil) the CIWMB is hoping more used oil is recycled and less used oil is disposed improperly (such as in a dumpster or the ground).

In certifying centers, the CIWMB is able to track success of the used oil recycling programs that occur throughout the state.

A certified center will post a sign like this on its windows or doors to notify the public that it collects used oil:

How do I get a free used oil recycling container?

There are two ways to get a used oil container.

Call the WRCOG Used Oil Hotline at 800-350-4OIL and we will do one of two things:

  1. Direct you to the nearest Certified Center or local facility that has used oil containers available free of charge.
  2. Send you a used oil container by mail or delivery.

Additionally, you might encourage your local Certified Center to call us at 800-350-4OIL to receive used oil containers. If you aren’t sure where your closest Certified Collection Center is either call our hotline at 800-350-4OIL or check out our brochure.

NOTE: All Certified Collection Centers collect used oil, but not all Certified Centers collect used oil filters. The centers that collect used oil filters are indicated in the brochure by the following symbol:

What if my oil is contaminated (water, antifreeze, etc)?

If your oil is contaminated it is considered a household hazardous waste (HHW) and cannot be disposed of like straight motor oil. Contaminated oil has to be taken to a household hazardous waste event for disposal.

Riverside County Waste Management Department (RCWMD) runs the Household Hazardous Waste Program for Riverside County. For more information on household hazardous waste collection Program please visit the RCWMD website. http://www.rivcowm.org/
